From the Principal

Dear Parents,

This is our final week before GATSBY, our 2014 Fashion Show.  Please make sure you send in your reservations and raffle tickets to the office by Tuesday, April 1.  We are grateful to all the parents who have volunteered for the various committees and the gift of their time and talent on behalf of all the children at St. Bernard Catholic School.

On April 14, the Kid’s Community Dental Clinic will be at St. Bernard to screen all the students.  The consent forms will go home on Wednesday, April 3.  The Dental clinic provides a short talk on Dental Hygiene and health education and then screens all the students and provides Flouride treatment to those who have signed the consent form for fluoride.  Each student who participates will receive a dental goodie bag.  We are thankful to Providence Health for arranging this service for our community.

Thank you to all the families who supported the Northeast Peace Walk on Saturday. It was a terrific community event.

Thank you to the many families who attended the Mass for Monsignor McSorley on Sunday.  As soon as Funeral arrangements are available, we will notify you.  Please keep the entire St. Bernard Parish Community in your prayers as well as the McSorley family.

**********

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in
the hollow of His hand.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

From

The

Principal

Dear Parents,

A huge thank you to Mrs. Moran (Isaac-6) and her team for the adorable Valentine Pictures!  It was a terrific idea and the students enjoyed looking at their photos from the Valentine Dance and Party.

Thank you to the many families who paid their registration fee ($100) per family and enrolled online. The registration fee per family is now $125 with $100 going towards book fees. If you do not plan to return to St. Bernard next year, please notify the office as soon as possible.

Congratulations to our Eighth Graders on their acceptances into High School! Please keep the eighth grade in your prayers as they head off on Retreat at Sacred Heart on Tuesday

St Bernard's Speech Team will be competing at the St. Bernadine of Sienna Speech Tournament onSaturday, March 22.  Fourteen 6th-8th graders will be attending the competition including:  Mark Camarena, Daniel Valdez, Joshua Moran, Tana Carrillo, Josclyne Dizon, Jacob Gudani, Aleigha Smith, Matthew Villanueva, Eric Cabato, Matthew De La Cruz, Aeris Deleon, Gabriel Palaganas, Sebastian Bernal and Michelle Barraza. We all wish the team the best of luck and thank Ms. Moore for her dedication to the team!

The entire faculty will be attending the CUE Conference this week. We will be taking courses and going to lectures on best practices using technology in the classroom.  Mr. Heinen and Mr. Donohue are actually taking a course on MINECRAFT: STUDENTS CRAFT THEIR OWN LEARNING!  Other teachers are taking courses on Blended Learning and the Flipped Classroom!  Several of the courses are funded by a professional development grant we were awarded through C3 for $12,000.  This grant is in conjunction with the Parish and will provide professional development for the entire community in Google Apps, Office Software, Blended Learning and the Flipped Classroom.  You can learn about the conference at the following website:  http://www.cue.org/annual.

St. Bernard's would like to thank First Century Bank's Reading Is the Way Up Program for their generous donation to our middle school. We were awarded $1500 dollars for the purchase of texts to supplement our transition to the Common Core State Standards in Literature. We are looking forward to introducing a variety of new novels and plays to our middle school students thanks to their generosity.  Thank you, Mr. Donohue, for applying for this grant on behalf of St. Bernard Catholic School!

Next week, a new and exciting after school music program will begin at St. Bernard.  Thanks to the generosity of SoundArt, a music education nonprofit, select students who have exhibited musical passion, talent, and dedication will have to opportunity to play together in a real band!  They will learn the basics of drums, guitar, bass and keyboard, as well as the technical side of music performance.  Mr. Metz and his long time bandmate Lincoln Mendell will be leading the program.  Stay tuned, and for more information, visithttp://www.soundartla.org/

In next week's student work folder (Wednesday 3/26), you will find a form about information for our summer enrichment program that will be available this year. The dates will be June 30-July 3July 7-10, and July 14-17. The prices and fees will be on the form. You will have the option to sign up for whichever weeks work best for you and your child. Please contact Ms. Casanova if you have any questions (mcasanova@stbernard-school.com)

Please continue to keep in your prayers Monsignor McSorley and Mr. Santos.

Blessings,

From the

Principal

Dear Parents,

From TK-2:

This week, grades TK-2 celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a week full of fun activities based on Dr. Seuss’ books.  It was a great thematic week that crossed all curriculum.  Students read Dr. Seuss books such as The Cat in the Hat, Fox in Socks, Wacky Wednesday, Green Eggs and Ham, and Sleep Book, to name a few.

Monday was Cat in the Hat Day.  TK and K made cats in hats, as well as their own Dr. Seuss hat. TK also had a lot of fun rhyming their own names with silly words, making drawings of their favorite book, and making fun predictions about Green eggs and Ham day.  Additionally TK and 4th, K and 8th, Second and 5th, and First and 7th read Dr. Seuss books together.  Second grade celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a little party. The reading pairs received Dr. Seuss bookmarks and stickers for reading so well to each other!

Tuesday was Fox in Socks Day and all students wore crazy socks and crazy hair.  There was also a pack of kindergarten foxes on the loose. Mr. Metz also read The Lorax to second grade, and helped them write letters to the Onceler. First grade learned about how Dr. Seuss wrote the Cat and the Hat. It took him a whole year!

On Wednesday, second grade read The Cat and the Hat. They wrote about what they would do if Thing 1 and Thing 2 paid them a visit at their homes. TK and K celebrated Wacky Wednesday by mixing up their daily schedule and other things in their day.

Thursday was our big day with Green Eggs and Ham.  We would like to thank all of the parents who brought in donations and helped cook, especially: Mrs. Ramirez, Ms. Luna, Mrs. Cortes, Ms. Dizon, Ms. Kat (Jesse’s aunt), Ms. David, Mrs. Moran, and Mrs. Vela.  The green eggs and ham were a big hit with most of the students at least trying them.  Thank you again!

Finally we ended our week with Pajama Day. It was a fantastic way to end our week of rhyming, fun, and wackiness.

From the 6th Grade:

In the spirit of service and sacrifice in this Lenten season, the 6th Grade hosted its first ever Lenten Lunch for grades 5-8 on Friday, March 7.  The result was a building of community, appreciation for all the Lord has done for us, and an all around good time.  8th Grader, Brandon Arias, had the following to say, "It was a good time, and the waiters and waitresses were solid in making sure we were all taken care of."  Lastly, the 6th Grade wants to thank the following people for their support in making this event possible: Ms. Arceneaux and special thanks to our parent volunteers: Mr. and Mrs. Veliz, Mrs. Cabato, Ms. Marquez, Ms. Hernandez, and Ms. Salazar.  We couldn't have done it without you, and in the words of Jacob Winters, "Remember that Lent and Ash Wednesday is not just about putting away the bad things. It is about creating good things and helping the poor and the needy, being kind to people and much more."

From Mrs. Samaniego:

GRADELINK IS OPEN FOR REGISTRATION!  Families have until Saturday, March 15 to register for the 2014-2015 school year.  Registration is $100 per family (which will be applied to book fees for one child) on or before March 15, and $125 ($100 only will be applied to book fees) after March 15.  The office will be open on March 15 from 8:00AM-12:00 PM if parents need a computer to use for registration!  Tuition enrollment is also open!  Families can either use a paper sign-up (included in the Family Folder last week), online via Gradelink, or directly at www.smarttuition.com using our school code: 12654.

Report Cards will be published online on Wednesday, March 12 at 8:00 AM or if requested a hard copy sent home in the Student Folder.  Parents can download the published Report Cards directly from Gradelink or save to an electronic file on their computers!

The Fashion Show Committee needs your help!  Look through the Service Hours Opportunity Section for the many ways you help make our fundraiser successful. Families can meet their fundraising obligations by getting an AD for the program and selling Raffle Tickets and receive service hours for Gift Cards or items for our Auction!

As we begin our final trimester of the year, please make every effort to have your children to school on time, ready to learn, and in correct uniform.  Drop-off lunches should only be brought in an emergency and cannot be fast food as stated in the handbook.  Finally, during AM carline, U-Turns are not permitted.

Please join us for Stations of the Cross on Friday at 11:15 AM led by the 5th and 6th Grade Classes.

Blessings on your Lent,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

This week is busy with celebrations for Dr. Seuss, the end of Trimester 2, and the beginning of our Lenten Journey.  Lent begins on Wednesday, March 5 and we will attend Mass at 8 AM on Wednesday instead of Friday this week.   The following website is a great Lenten resource as you begin your Lenten Journey:http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Lent/.  Another website that I have shared before is the 3 Minute Retreat which also has an app for your phone and you can access here: http://www.loyolapress.com/3-minute-retreats-daily-online-prayer.htm.  Praying Lent can be found here:http://www.loyolapress.com/8-ways-to-pray-during-lent.htm

During Lent, the students in TK-8 will participate in Stations of the Cross, Lenten Retreats, and grades 3-8 will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  We will focus our “Faithful Disciple” Student Learning Expectation on Prayer, Fasting and Abstaining, and Alms Giving and Good Works during Lent providing opportunities for the students to practice these during the school day.

Pope Francis' Lenten Message 2014

"The Gospel is the real antidote to spiritual destitution"

Dear brothers and sisters, may this Lenten season find the whole Church ready to bear witness to all those who live in material, moral and spiritual destitution the Gospel message of the merciful love of God our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ. We can so this to the extent that we imitate Christ who became poor and enriched us by his poverty. Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.

May the Holy Spirit, through whom we are "as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything" (2 Cor 6:10), sustain us in our resolutions and increase our concern and responsibility for human destitution, so that we can become merciful and act with mercy. In expressing this hope, I likewise pray that each individual member of the faithful and every Church community will undertake a fruitful Lenten journey. I ask all of you to pray for me. May the Lord bless you and Our Lady keep you safe.

From the Vatican, 26 December 2013
Feast of Saint Stephen, Deacon and First Martyr

(The Entire Message is attached to this Newsletter)

Blessings on your Lenten Journey,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

From Mr. Heinen: Genius revealed itself Thursday when the 6th, 7th, and 8thgrades showed up with their experiments. Bridge design, vanishing water, dyslexia, surface tension, centrifugal force and radiation were some of the themes as the judges, who included doctors, lawyers, brokers, teachers, and National Science Honor Society members, left our campus inspired by the display of intellectual excellence.

  • 7th grader, Joshua Moran, took the Grand Prize with his study of traditional exercise versus a video game workout, “Sweating the Score”.
  • The 8th grade winners were: 1st place, Body Regeneration – Hannah Castaneda and Tana Carrillo; 2nd place, Electromagnetic Hoverboard – Christian Gonzalez; 3rd place, Electrolytes Light Bulb – Matthew De La Cruz and Paulo Adrayan.
  • The 7th grade winners were: 1st place, Dry Ice vs Regular Ice – Jacob Hernandez; 2nd place, Dominant Hand Sensitivity – Jarren Del Rosario; 3rd place, “Does gum make you smarter?” – Josclyne Dizon and Gabriel Palaganas.
  • The 6th grade winners were: 1st place, Car Aerodynamics – Gabriel Galaz and Angel Sanchez; 2nd place, Mangrove: Tsunami Stopper – Gabriel Morales and Anton Reyes; 3rd place, Musical Bottles – Isaac Calleros.

Grades TK-5 were treated to student presentations on Friday, and already say they’re excited to compete in the years to come. Our technologically savvy reporting team continued to deliver up to the minute news, interviews, and blogs on http://sbssciencefair2014.weebly.com/, and you can join the action on twitter @st_bernardLA.  Thanks to Webmaster Isaac Calleros, Editor-In-Chief Tana Carrillo, Editor Mark Camarena, Social Media Correspondent Hannah Castaneda, Reporter Joshua Moran, and Journalists Brandon Arias, Matthew Silva, Jesse Vela, Enrique Como-Dominguez, and Steven Torres.

Congratulations to all the participants! Our thanks go out to the judges and all of the parents who showed up in mass to support our young scientists.

Our First Communicants will receive for the first time the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday, February 25.  Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for this most important Sacrament.  All students receiving the Reconciliation should be in front of the church at 6:45 in Dress Uniform onTuesday, February 25

We hope to see all of our families at our School Mass on Sunday, March 2 at 9:30 AM.  The 5th Grade will organizing the lectors, petitions and gift bearers and our choir will be singing.  This is a great opportunity to celebrate Eucharist together as a school family! Please join us. Students should be in dress uniform, so the school community is easily visible to the larger parish community.  If students would like to sell Raffle Tickets- after Masses is a great opportunity to sell to parishioners!

I have received some questions about SMART Tuition.  I will be sending home more information in Wednesday’s Student Folder regarding setting up an account.  You can still register for next year on Gradelink and submit your fee to the office.  Our SMART Program will begin July 2014, but we want all parents to set up their account as soon as we get the go ahead from SMART.  Your reregistration, however, is complete with Gradelink and submission of $100 fee per family.  There are computers in the office to use for registration.

Monday, March 3 is the final day to submit and application for Tuition Assistance for 2014-2015.  Applications submitted without appropriate verification of income cannot be processed and unfortunately automatically denied.  Please read the instructions carefully.  Applications are also on our website to download.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

For My Second Grade Students

Valentine’s Day 2014

By: Ms. Molly Casanova

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Sometimes I wish

I could be just like you!

Although you are small

And still quite young

You hold a power

That is greater than some.

 Each day that you enter

Your face has a beautiful smile.

I welcome you in

Inviting you to stay awhile.

 When we started the year

I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Some things would be key,

Like responsibility and respect.

We continued to grow

Lots of talking and laughter,

Asking lots of questions

Like, “What do we do after?”

 Always eager to work,

To learn with such glee.

You are also a teacher

Just sit back and see.

 Our classroom is full

Of books, papers, and supplies.

Keep finishing your work.

Always open your eyes.

 School is also more

Than what we read or write.

Like how we treat one another

And learn not to fight.

You teach me of love

You remind me to share

You bring me great joy

In the many ways that you care

 I hope that you know

And you’re able to see,

Without each of you

I wouldn’t fully be me.

 You are so very special

Full of such talent and grace

A piece of you will stay with me

Even when you leave this place.

Each of you has a purpose

And deserves great applause

Thank you for being a gift to me

A true blessing from God.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

A huge thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Moran (Isaac) and Mr. and Mrs. de la Cruz (Matthew) and their helpers Mrs. Moran and Ms. Ramos (Dylan), Mr. Hernandez (Izcalli and Maya), Mrs. Moran (Augie and Viviana), Mr. Lopez (Grace and Lauren) and Mrs. Hernandez (Eduardo) for a beautiful Valentine’s Day celebration.  The photo booth was a big hit!

This week is our annual Science Fair for the 6-7-8 Grades. Parents are welcome to view the projects from 3:30-7:00 PM on Thursday in the Hall.  The judging will take place from 12:00-3:00 PM on Thursday and we welcome our volunteer judges from the community!  Thank you to Mr. Heinen and his students for their hard work on this event!

Computers are set up in the office for those who would like to reregister for next year.  On Fridays, after Mass, we will have a Notary in the office until 9:30 AM for those who need one for their Tuition Assistance Applications.  Thank you to Ms. Cortes (Elijah) for volunteering her time for this.

This week you will receive your Raffle Tickets and other information for our Fashion Show: “GATSBY” will be held on campus on April 5th. This is our last formal fundraiser of the year.  Be on the lookout for information this week.

We are very grateful to the St. Bernard School Foundation for their donation of $10,000. The money will be used to fund four teachers to attend the Primary Conference in Pasadena March 1st, to help partially fund four 6th grade students to attend the Catholic Leadership Camp this summer, and to help with tuition assistance.

This weekend, I will be speaking at Masses at my home parish about Together in Mission. St. Bernard Catholic School receives funding from Together in Mission, which helps us keep the tuition affordable for all those who want a Catholic Education for their children in this community.

We are indeed blessed to have so many sponsors for our school: Catholic Education Foundation, Together in Mission, St. Bernard School Foundation and the C3 Pilot!

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

Kindness Update:

Last week, a class left their backpacks outside while participating in P.E.  One backpack was apart from the others, and in the path of students walking to their classrooms.  After watching several students walk around the backpack, Seiji Kim stopped and moved it to the side.  Upon inquiry, he responded, “I don’t want anyone to trip.”   Thank you, Seiji, for looking out for others!

From Mr. Heinen:

Rainy Day Pick-Up Procedure

Please enter the church parking lot via Ave 32 as normal for car line and slowly find a parking space to the west of the gate.  Park your car and check out your student by foot.  Please use the sidewalk along the side of the church rather than walking through the parked cars, if at all possible. When exiting be especially attentive to children walking, and other cars pulling out and pulling in.  Exit cautiously via Ave 33 at the front of the church.

During our recent Rainy Day Pick-Ups there have been multiple “close calls” due to not following procedure and impatience in the lot.  It is only by the grace of God that no one has been injured. We realize that last Thursday was unusual due to the last moment rain call as well as Tk and K being on the big campus. Thank you in advance for your understanding and effort in making rainy day handoff safe and sane.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who were able to join us on our Picnic Day.  It was so lovely to see everyone fill up the campus and spend lunch with your children and grandchildren.

February begins with a new Student Learning Expectation focus: Active Individuals.  Christ’s example of kindness can be seen throughout the Gospels.  Kindness week is celebrated February 5-15, 2014! During February, we will focus on the many forms of kindness-through actions-words and even thoughts using Christ as our model.  Students and parents can be “caught being kind” and will be recognized at Morning Prayer.  Kindness coins will be given to those “caught being kind”!  I hope you will join us in fostering a community of kindness during February and beyond!

This Wednesday, February 5 we will have an Open House from 4:30-7:30 PM for new families who are interested in Catholic Education for their children! Please feel free to forward the link to families looking for a school!  http://www.stbernard-school.com/sites/default/files/LATE%20Open%20House%20Flyer%20for%20tk-8.pdf  You can also like us on Facebook by going to the school website atwww.stbernard-school.com

Student Leadership

Student Leadership will meet Monday from 3:15-4:15 PM.

Student Leadership would like to thank students, parents and teachers for a successful Catholic Schools Week!  We enjoyed seeing all St. Bernard students and families taking part in the various activities which took part this past week.

On Friday we held our School Family Lunch and asked students to reflect and share their favorite part of Catholic Schools Week.

St. Luke liked everything, especially Pajama day because we got to go to school in our pajamas.  Math Olympics was fun because we got to play fun math games.  It was the best week!

St. Valentine’s favorite part of Catholic Schools week was the “Math Olympics.”

St. Matthew shared: “Our favorite part of Catholic Schools Week was pajama day because the campus was peaceful and we had the opportunity to drop everything and read.”

St. Veronica enjoyed Catholic Schools Week because it’s fun, and makes us aware that we are blessed.

St. Patrick liked…”The entire week because we got to read and relax in our pajamas, do cool activities like Math Olympics, write to the Congressman, and spend time with our real and school families.”

St. Sebastian enjoyed writing letters and the Math Olympics.

St. Joan or Arc said, “It’s fun and it was a whole week dedicated to growing in faith, knowledge, and service.”

St. Barbara’s favorite activities were DEAR day and the Math Olympics.

St. Francis liked Math Olympics and DEAR Day.

St. Christopher liked the Grandparents/Parents Picnic and Appreciation Day.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Thank you to the Madrinas/Padrinos Group (Mr. Lopez, Ms. Navarette, and Ms. Gomez), along with Mrs. Castaneda and Mrs. Stefka for organizing the Krispy Kreme Donut Sale on Sunday!  Thank you to the many students and their families who attended Mass to kick off Catholic Schools Week 2014, Student Leadership for organizing the Mass, and the Choir and Mr. Metz!

Our Theme for Catholic Schools Week is “Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service”.  Each day this week we will be celebrating with a special activity organized by Student Leadership based on Faith, Knowledge and Service.  Thank you for sending your children to St. Bernard Catholic School!  We hope you can join us for our picnic Wednesday at 12:15 PM when parents and grandparents can bring lunch and picnic with the children at school.

During Catholic Schools Week, La Salle High School holds their annual “Week of Service” when they are able to help at schools, soup kitchens, food pantries, and various other charitable organizations. This week we will have a group of La Salle student volunteers spend time at our school to help in the classrooms and with the students. We are honored to have them serve and participate in our Catholic Schools Week events.

Last Friday, we presented the Loyola Seniors with a St. Bernard polo and cards.  The following card, written collectively by the 6th Grade, sums up how we all feel about having them with us for three weeks.

Dear Loyola Gentlemen,

On behalf of the 6th Grade at St. Bernard Catholic School, we want to say a tremendous than you for all your volunteer efforts in the last three weeks, and let you know how much we enjoyed your presence.  Your energy, enthusiasm and diligence have demonstrated how much we can also achieve in school and in life, as long as we our minds to the task.  Therefore, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the smiles, academic and athletic adventures, and we wish you all the best,

Sincerely,

The 6th Grade

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

SCIENCE FAIR KICK-OFF!

From Mr. Heinen: The Science Fair Kick-Off last Friday entertained the entire student body with high-energy performances by our Loyola Cub volunteers.  Rockets were showered all over the courtyard as each student battled to have their paper airplane soar the farthest.  6thgrader, Angel Sanchez, proved to have the best design with a 35+ yard flight.  Way to go Angel!  The event initiates a month of focus on math and science in preparation for the 5thAnnual St. Bernard Science Fair upcoming this February 20th - 21st.

We bid farewell to our exceptional Loyola Cubs: Andrew Daze, Joe Harding, Aaron Samuelson, Jason Capili, Eric Carbone, and Isaiah Everett, who wrapped up their three week Senior Service Project on Friday at the Science Fair Kick-Off.   The faculty and students thank them for the lessons they taught, the individual and in-class tutoring, their positive engagement, and mostly for their Christian example of being “Men for Others”.

The celebration kicked off with a read aloud of "100th Day Worries" by Margery Cuyler. After, the students went off to do fun activities at the 4 stations set up for them; 1st made paper hats that said "Happy 100th Day!" and 2nd grade made paper glasses to wear. Everyone also made necklaces out of 100 cereal bits, practiced counting by 10s to 100 using a bunch of tasty treats, writing about what they would buy with 100 dollars, and what they would be like at 100 years old. Finally, the students received cookies and badges to congratulate them for being 100 days smarter. From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  This week is busy as we welcome our Loyola Seniors for their Service here at St. Bernard Catholic School!  The following is from Mr. Heinen who is coordinating their service for the next three weeks:  St. Bernard welcomes Loyola Cubs Jason Capili, Eric Carbone, Andrew Dazé, Isaiah Everett, Joseph Harding, and Aaron Samuelson for the month of January.  They will be actively tutoring and helping on campus full-time as part of their Senior Service Community Outreach Project.

Our annual Candy Sale begins on Wednesday, January 8, and to ease the pick up of the boxes there will be no carline on Wednesday afternoon.  Parents are asked to park in the church parking lot, and proceed to the Hall where you will sign for your boxes of candy.  All students will be on the main campus for pick-up.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

Our First Open House for prospective families is on Saturday, January 11, from10:00 AM-1:00PM.  Please encourage family and friends looking for a quality Catholic Education to consider St. Bernard!

Our PTO Meeting on Wednesday at 7:00 PM is open to all who wish to attend!  I will be reviewing the results of the survey we sent out in December.

Please remember Father Perry in your prayers for a speedy recovery from his surgery this past weekend.

A Prayer for the New Year (Loyola Press)

God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another.
As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

December has been a very busy month in the classrooms.  Students have participated in the Hour of Code, attended Confession and Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayer Service, prepared for retreats, and met with professionals about their careers. This week we will teach our Virtus Program Teaching Touching Safety. We will also be entertained by the Bell Choir from Holy Family High School, and meet with our “School Families" on Friday for an Advent activity. On Thursday, December 20 we will have our Christmas Concert in the Church followed by Hot Chocolate and Churros sale in the Hall.  All students must be signed in and out of their classrooms on concert night in order to get everyone safely to and from the church.  Students must be signed in by 6:30 PM. We appreciate your cooperation with these procedures to keep your children safe.

From Ms. Montes:   Ms. Montes, our Art Teacher, was selected to attend the Vermont Studio Center Residency in Johnson, Vermont. The residency will provide a work studio and a pleasant environment for her to create artwork.  She will also have the opportunity to interact with various artists and writers from around the world. We are excited for her to participate in this unique opportunity and we are excited to hear about her experience upon her return in January!  Congratulations, Ms. Montes!

Hour of Code: This week most students wrapped up their Hour of Code. Across the school, students learned the basics of command programming using our technology resources. Middle school students have continued their programming, graduating to Python encoding via the Khan Academy website. Check out these sites to learn more! http://csedweek.org/  https://www.khanacademy.org/hour-of-code/hour-of-code-tutorial/v/welcome-hour-of-code

Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayer Service: Ms. Gomez and the 3rd Grade Class performed a reenactment of  the Guadalupe miracle which ended with a beautiful song in Spanish.  All students had memorized their parts for this reenactment and it was quite an impressive feat for such a young group of students.  Thank you Ms. Gomez and her 3rd Graders!

First Grade Career Day: Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Cortes, Mr. Awakuni and Mr. Casillas for sharing their talents with the First Grade on Career Day in First Grade!

We will keep our school survey open through December 20, 2013. If you haven’t had a chance to respond, please do so by December 20.  The results of the survey will be shared at our PTO Meeting on January 8 and published in the Bulletin the following Monday. Thank you!

The faculty, staff and I wish you and your families a happy and holy Christmas and a New Year filled with the Peace of Christ and share with you this beautiful prayer from our Patron Saint.

Please remember in your prayers Jordan Tadle and his family, the Frias Family, the Lingao Family, the Santos Family, Monsignor McSorley, and Monsignor McNulty.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

Christmas Prayer

Let Your goodness Lord appear to us, that we

made in your image, conform ourselves to it.
In our own strength
we cannot imitate Your majesty, power, and wonder
nor is it fitting for us to try.
But Your mercy reaches from the heavens
through the clouds to the earth below.
You have come to us as a small child,
but you have brought us the greatest of all gifts,
the gift of eternal love
Caress us with Your tiny hands,
embrace us with Your tiny arms
and pierce our hearts with Your soft, sweet cries.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153)

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Thank you to the TK-2 Parents, Mrs. Castaneda, and Mrs. Cortes for the organization of the Christmas Breakfast!  It was a beautiful community event.  Thank you also to the Sixth Grade for the readings, the Kindergarten for singing, and the Choir for providing the music!  I also want to thank our Madrinas/Padrinos Parents: Mr. Lopez, Mr. Hernandez, Mrs. Salazar, and Ms. Navarette for all their recruitment efforts at the Masses and throughout the community.

Hour of Code Week: St. Bernard's will be visited by successful programmers, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, virtually, as we participate in the Hour of Code this week. Students from all grades will explore and learn how games and programs work and even make their own! As participants in this national program, we are able to use our C3 resources to better prepare our students for 21st century jobs.  If you would like to do some coding at home, check out the following website:http://csedweek.org/

Teaching Touching Safety: This week you will receive a letter regarding our Virtus Teaching Touching Safety Program for Children adopted by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.  This safety program teaches children and young people basic safety rules to help keep them safe from child abuse and also addresses such timely topics as computer and internet safety. We are in Year 4 of the program and the lessons this year are on Internet Safety and Creating and Following Family Rules.  Please be sure to sign the letter and return so your children can participate in this important program designed to keep them safe at all times.  If you have questions about the curriculum, we have three binders in the office with the lessons for you to view.  The program will be taught the week of December 16-20.

Speech: Middle school students competed in their first speech tournament  this Saturday, December 7 at  Santa Rosa/Bishop Alemany.  St. Bernard was there in force with a total of 18 students from grades 6-8.   We are so proud of all of the students who performed including:  Crystal Bonilla, Joscylne Dizon, Joshua Moran, Michelle Barraza, Gabriel Palaganas, Matthew Villanueva, Jacob Hernandez,  Matthew De La Cruz, Andres Quintana, Anthony Ramirez, Tana Carrillo, Daniel Valdez, Eric Cabato, Jacob Gudani, Mark Camarena, Sebastian Bernal, Aleigha Smith and Aeris DeLeon. We had several students win top honors in their categories.  Joshua Moran and Michelle Barraza received Honorable Mention in Improvisation Dual.  Tana Carrillo won 1st place in Dramatic Interpretation.  Danny Valdez won 2nd place in Dramatic Interpretation and 1st place in Oratorical Interpretation.  A big thanks to all the parents who helped make this event possible, and a special thanks to Mrs. Cabato, Mrs. Lacson, and Mr. de la Cruz for all their hard work.

On Tuesday, there will be Fashion Show Steering Committee Meeting at 6:00 PMin the 3rd Grade Classroom.  This is our big Spring Fundraiser and Raffle and a great way to earn service hours.  Following the Fashion Show Meeting, we will have our PTO Meeting. All are welcome!

We hope to see you at our Chuck E Cheese Fundraiser this Wednesday!

Blessings on your Advent,

Mrs. Samaniego

Family Advent Traditions:

Advent wreath:  The Advent wreath, which has German origins, is probably the most recognized Advent custom. It is a wreath made of evergreens that is bound to a circle of wire. It symbolizes the many years from Adam to Christ in which the world awaited its Redeemer; it also represents the years that we have awaited His second and final coming. The wreath holds four equally spaced candles, the three purple ones lit on the “penitential” Sundays and a pink one for Gaudete, the joyful third Sunday in Advent.

The empty manger:  Each child may have his own individual manger, or there may be one manger for the whole family. The idea is that when acts of service, sacrifice, or kindness are done in honor of Baby Jesus as a birthday present, the child receives a piece of straw to put into the manger. Then, on Christmas morning, “Baby Jesus” is placed in the manger. Encourage your children to make Jesus’ bed as “comfortable” as possible through their good deeds. In the process, explain Christ’s incomparable self-gift at Christmas and Easter that enables us to be part of God’s family.

The Jesse tree:  The Jesse tree tells about Christ’s ancestry through symbols and relates Scripture to salvation history, progressing from creation to the birth of Christ. The tree can be made on a poster board with the symbols glued on, or on an actual tree. For further information read, Advent and Christmas in a Catholic Home.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

We hope you can join us for our First Trimester Honors Assembly in the Church onWednesday, December 4 at 1:15 PM.  Students must be in Dress Uniform twice this week-Wednesday for the Honors Assembly and Friday for Mass.  Thank you in advance for making sure your children are dressed appropriately on both these days.

During Advent, the students will participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and a Retreat as we prepare for the Birth of Jesus. The Second Grade will perform a short play on St. Nicholas after Mass on Friday, December 6 to honor St. Nicholas.  On Tuesday, December 11, the Third Grade will reenact the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the church at 11 AM.  Also, the Junior High is invited to join the 6th Grade as they host a weekly Bible Study on Tuesdays during Advent from10:20-10:40AM with Mrs. Schreck.

This weekend we will have our School Mass at 9:30 AM and Breakfast will be served in the Hall from 8 AM-12 PM.  The TK-K will be open for prospective parents, so please invite your family and friends with 4-5 year olds to come and visit our school on that day from 11-1 PM.   At the end of Mass, our Kindergarten students will sing a Christmas Carol for the entire Church!  We hope to see everyone in attendance at this event.  Students should meet in front of the church at 9:15 AM in Dress Uniform.  We will sit together as a community.  Please see the announcement at the end of this bulletin for more details.

I was notified last week that the parking lot will be used for filming this week.  This should not interfere with Drop Off or Pick Up, but please be aware that there may be more traffic than usual with the filming.  Thank you!

Finally, our school is participating in STAR Enterprise Testing for Math and Reading through an Archdiocesan pilot.  Students in Grades 2-8 have taken the baseline assessment and this week the teachers will be analyzing these scores to create lessons that address individual and class needs.  These are computerized assessments and provide the teachers real-time data on student learning.  These assessments will be given every 6 weeks, and if a child is struggling in an area the test will be given more often to insure that each student is progressing toward mastery.  You will be receiving a letter regarding your child’s baseline scores in both Math and Reading in next week’s (December 11) student folder.

Good Luck to our Speech Team as they participate in the Santa Rosa Elementary Speech Tournament this Saturday, December 7.   This is their first tournament of the year!

Please keep in your prayers Mr. Santos (Father of John Paul and Pauline) and Dolores Contreras (Grandmother of Max), as well as Monsignor McSorely.

Blessings on your Advent,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

The faculty, Ms. Esquival, and I wish you and your families a Blessed Thanksgiving!  We are grateful for the trust you place in us to educate your children in the Catholic faith.    This community is grateful for the support we receive from Together in Mission, Catholic Education Foundation, Father Perry and the St. Bernard Parishioners and finally the C3 Pilot for investing in our Technology Program.   If you would like to send a thank you to any of these groups, please drop it by the office and we will make sure they receive your note.

When you are visiting with family and friends over the Thanksgiving holiday, please invite them to come visit our school and consider St. Bernard Catholic School for their children!

With gratitude,

Mrs. Samaniego

Thanksgiving Blessing

O God,
We thank you for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun, for the ocean and streams, for the towering hills and the whispering wind, for the trees and green grass

We thank you for our senses by which we hear the songs of birds, and see the splendor of fields of golden wheat, and taste autumn's fruit, rejoice in the feel of snow, and smell the breath of spring flowers.

Grant us a heart opened wide to all this beauty; and save us from being so blind that we pass unseeing when even the common thornbush is aflame with your glory.
For each new dawn is filled with infinite possibilities for new beginnings and new discoveries. Life is constantly changing and renewing itself. In this new day of new beginnings with God, all things are possible. We are restored and renewed in a joyous awakening to the wonder that our lives are and, yet, can be.
Amen.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

The staff and I are full of gratitude as we begin November.  Last week was a bit wild with the filming crew on Monday and all of the parents and grandparents in carline were cooperative and understanding.  On Tuesday, the 8th grade led us in the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary in English, Spanish, and Tagalog.  Then, on Wednesday the staff and I were provided great food once again for the final day of parent conferences.  Thursday brought the Halloween Carnival where the 7-8 Graders outdid themselves by organizing the games, booths, food and Haunted House and Student Leadership for organizing the parade and awards.  Everyone behaved beautifully, and it was terrific to see so many families in attendance.  Thank you to the many parents who lent a hand on that day, in particular, Mrs. Castaneda, Mrs. Sanchez, and Ms. Valle for helping Mr. Heinen and Mr. Donohue with the organization of the event!

This Wednesday, November 6, I will be holding a Parent Meeting that will go over the Common Core Standards.  The meeting will be held at three times (3:30 PM,5:00 PM6:30 PM) and lasts no more than one hour.  The 6:30 PM Meeting will be done in both English and Spanish.  Parents will receive information on the Common Core Standards for their child’s grade.  It is expected that at least one parent attend one of the meetings.

We will hold two $1 Jeans Days this month to raise money for the Parish St. Vincent de Paul Group with which they purchase food vouchers for the poor of the community for Thanksgiving.  Students may wear their jeans and polo on $1 Jeans Day!

Our Student Learning Expectation this month is Faithful Disciples.  There will be many opportunities to practice being faithful disciples as we celebrate gratitude at Thanksgiving and prepare for Advent.

We continue to pray for Monsignor McSorley and Mr. Santos and all those in our community in need of our prayers.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION (GRADES 1-4)

This past Friday, our first through fourth graders learned about the Mexican Holiday, Dia de los Muertos. All teachers combined their classes in the Hall where students enjoyed listening to a bi-lingual story read by Mrs. Moore. After learning about why and how Dia de los Muertos is celebrated, students broke into groups to part-take in Day of the Dead themed activities. Students made their own papel picados, created calaveras out of paper to represent Mexican sugar skulls, and enjoyed delicious Canela cookies. The teachers would like to thank Mrs. Cortes, Mrs. Villa, Mrs. Moran and Mr. and Mrs. Alamillo, who assisted with activities, donated cookies and helped with setup and clean-up. Everyone’s assistance made Dia de los Muertos a successful and fun day for the students to enjoy!

Participation by class is as follows: 1st Place: TK-87%, 2nd Place: Gr.7-80%, 3rd Place Tie: Gr. 8, 4, 5 -79%, 4th Place: Gr. 2 -73%, 5th Place: Gr.1- 69%, 6th Place tie: K, 3rd, 6th    Congratulations to Ashley Escalante- the top student in raising funds for the 2013 Walk-a-Thon!  The winning class will have their choice of prize (Movie, Lunch), and Ashley will receive a gift certificate on Monday, along with 25 choice lunch credits!

On Thursday, October 31, we will hold our annual Halloween Carnival sponsored by the 7th and 8th Grades. This is an opportunity for the 7th and 8th grades to organize the event for the younger students.   School begins at regular time 7:50 AM and the Parade will begin at 10:00 AM followed by games, haunted house and food.  Parents attending with their children may take their children home after the carnival, or pick the students up at regular time 2:55 PM.  There will be no carline on Thursday.  Wristbands are $10 and allow student unlimited participation in all activities and include lunch (hot dog, chips and drink).  Extra food tickets can be purchased for 25 cents a piece.  The funds raised help offset the cost of the yearbook, so that we can keep the cost affordable for all students and also help keep the Grade 8 Fees at $200.  This year we will also send a portion to the Archdiocese for the Catholic Relief Services for victims of the Philippine earthquake.  You can also donate directly by going to this link: http://emergencies.crs.org/crs-joins-church-in-philippines-in-quake-response/

Please use good judgment when sending your child in costume.  Costumes should be safe (no long costumes that could cause a child to trip), and modest.  No weapons of any kind are permitted.

Parents are welcome to join us for the Halloween Carnival!  Service Hours will be given for any donations made to the event for those of you in need of service hours!

We have two minimum days this week: Wednesday, October 30 for our last day of parent conferences, and Friday, November 1 which is our usual First Friday 12:30 PM Dismissal.

Friday, November 1 is All Saint’s Day and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The school will be attending Mass together at 8:00 AM and you are welcome to join us.

Once again, the faculty and I are most grateful to the food and goodies during parent conferences and for the room parents for the organizing of the food!   We appreciate all you do for us!

Please make arrangements to attend one of the November 6 Parent Meetings.  The same meeting is offered at 3:30, 5:00 PM and 6:30 (Spanish and English).  The meeting will cover the shifts from State Standards and the Common Core Standards.  A review of the School Budget will also be covered.

Please continue to keep Monsignor McSorley and Mr. Santos in your prayers, and all the victims of the earthquake in the Philippines.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

LEADERSHIP FIELD TRIP

Several Student Leadership members had the opportunity to attend a Student Council Leadership Retreat at Providence High School last Thursday. They participated in team building activities with students from Catholic Schools in the surrounding area. The focus of the retreat centered around Jesus, our ultimate model and leader.

In addition to group activities, our students attended mass and enjoyed a tour of the school. Everyone came away from the field trip with positive experiences and leadership tools they will be sharing with their fellow Student Leadership members.

Thank you to the parents (Mrs. Hernandez, Mr. and Mrs. Bates, and Ms. Sanchez) who volunteered their time to drive and chaperone!

RED RIBBON WEEK

Student Leadership would like to thank all those who participated in our Red Ribbon week activities.  It was a huge success and we enjoyed seeing all of the student body's crazy hair-do's and cute pajamas throughout the week.

Although Red Ribbon week is officially over, it is important to always lead a healthy lifestyle and say "No" to drugs and other unhealthy choices.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

A huge thank you to our Walk-A-Thon Committees and their volunteers.  It was a wonderful day made possible by all of our volunteers, and the generosity of Cathedral High School and our many sponsors.   If you still have pledges out, please send them to the office this week, so they can be included in our total forFriday, October 25 when the top percentage class is announced!

We have moved the Living Rosary to next Tuesday, October 29 at 2:15 PM in the church to accommodate our Pajama Day for Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week’s Theme for 2013 is “A HEALTHY ME IS DRUG FREE”.  This is a national campaign to encourage healthy lifestyles that are “Drug Free”.  Student Leadership has planned daily activities to remind students that fun can be healthy and positive!  Daily activities are listed below in Student Leadership section and were sent home last week in the Wednesday Student Folders.

In the next few weeks, there will be film crews using the parking lot.  These rentals bring revenue to both the church and school.  These should not conflict with carline either in the morning or afternoon, but there may be a little more traffic and require a bit more caution.  On Monday, October 28 the Hall is being used for a film.  After school care will take place in the MPR on that day and not the hall.  There will be security and the area guarded to separate the students from the film crew.

Parent Conferences continue this week on Wednesday and dismissal is again at 12:30 PM.  Thank you in advance for arriving on time, and staying within the time frame set out by the teachers.  It is much appreciated.

Next week, we will hold our annual Halloween Carnival organized by the 8thgrade.  The seventh grade will create the Haunted House in the MPR, also.  Please remember that costumes should be appropriate and no weapons of any kind brought to school.  Our parade will begin at 10 AM followed by games and food.  Parents are invited to come and bring younger siblings!  More details will be in the Student Folder on Wednesday.  In anticipation of Halloween and keeping children safe, please read the Tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics found here: http://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/news-features-and-safety-tips/pages/Halloween-Safety-Tips.aspx

Monsignor McSorley is doing well after surgery last Thursday, but is still in need of our prayers for a full recovery.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Our Walk-A-Thon is on this Saturday, October 19 at 8:30 AM, but it is good to arrive around 8:00 AM to get set for your walk!  There will be food before and after the event.   There are several opportunities for service hours-please see below in the Fundraising Section of this bulletin! Last year, we raised $27,000 and we are at $19,000 as of today. Thank you to the families who have fulfilled their $200 obligation for this event.  We are hoping to break the $30,000 mark and will do so with ease if each family does their part.  We currently have 145 families, and if each family raises $200 that would be $29,000! These fundraisers help us keep the tuition affordable and without them, tuition would rise dramatically for all families.  Congratulations again to 7th Grade for having the highest percentage of participation for the second week!  They will have a pizza lunch this week for their efforts!

This week begins our Parent Conferences.  Attached to this bulletin is a Tip Sheet for Parents from the Harvard School of Education which you might find helpful.  The teachers have been preparing for these conferences and have a limited time allotted.  Please arrive on time for your scheduled conference, and if you cannot make it, please contact the teacher directly via email or phone the office.  We appreciate your cooperation and support in making these meetings beneficial to your child’s success at St. Bernard Catholic School.

This week, we will add a section to the website under Parents.  This section will be labeled PTO and all meeting agenda’s and minutes will be published online for parents to read.  We hope this will encourage parents to become involved in the Parent Teacher Organization.

Thank you to the Room Parents for organizing food for our staff during the long days of teacher conferences and the many parents who have assisted them in this effort.  We are most appreciative!

Mr. Santos (Pauline and John Paul) is home from the hospital, and although he and the family continue to need our prayers, he has stabilized.  We continue to pray for Monsignor McSorley, also who continues to be a great supporter of St. Bernard Catholic School.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Thank you to Mr. Donohue and the Eighth Grade for preparing for our school Mass on Sunday!  We thank all of our volunteers who helped market the school (Madrinas/Padrinos Group- Ms. Gomez, Mrs. Garvey, Mr. Hernandez, Ms. Navarette, Mrs. Salazar), the eighth grade parents for selling Krispy Kreme Donuts (Ms. Valle, and Mrs. Castaneda) and our Walk-A-Thon Committee (Mr. Vela and Mr. Heinen) for getting the word out about our fundraiser!

Last week, I was so impressed with my faculty and their organization of events in order to create opportunities for your children to be a part of the St. Bernard Catholic School Community.  Mrs. Forillo, Ms. Daze and Ms. Gomez and their Student Leadership Team organized the “Families” lunch on Thursday and then organized us all for these families to sit together at Mass on First Friday.  Thenon Friday, Ms. Casanova and her volunteers organized a beautiful recognition for our Student Athletes and their coaches and a terrific Pep Rally.  Thank you to the parents who assisted us on Friday: Ms. Sanchez, Mrs. Salazar, Ms. Marquez, Mrs. Naranja, Mrs. Cortez, Mrs. Hernandez, Mrs. Alferez, Mrs. Ramirez, Mrs. Castaneda and Mrs. Mr. Ponce. We are lucky to have such an amazing group of teachers and parents here at St. Bernard who give of their time during and after school and on weekends to help build the community here at St. Bernard.

Our TK-K Assistant is beginning her Creative Movement Class on Monday at 3:15 in the Hall.  Only students who have permissions slips and have paid will be allowed to participate.  If your child is in the class, they should wear their uniform shorts and a polo or Walk-A-Thon T-shirt to school on Mondays as that is perfect dress for the class.  Students not picked up at 4:15 will be immediately signed into After School Care.

Our Walk-A-Thon is one of the ways your family can meet their Fundraising Commitment for 2013-2014 which is part of each families $450 obligation each year.  If each of our $145 families raises $200 in registrations or donations or sponsors we would generate $29,000. We have already raised $6000 from our Corporate Sponsors.  Thank you for doing your part!

We hope to see everyone at our Chuck E Cheese Fundraiser on Mondayevening!  This is a good time to meet with other families and get to know your children’s school friends.  We look forward to seeing your all there on Monday.

On Tuesday, the teachers will attend the Specialization Phase of their Catechesis classes. This is the second year of this process for our faculty, and the second class of this year.

As a culmination of Respect Life Week our 6-8th Graders will be attending a Rally for Life with students from all over the Archdiocese on Wednesday.  We are grateful for the support of the Respect Life Committee for subsidizing the event for our students and keeping the cost affordable for all of our students to attend.

October is the month of the Rosary.  As part of this celebration we will have a Living Rosary on October 23 organized by our 8th Grade.  October is a great time to incorporate the Rosary into your Family Prayer life. The following link is a great resource!http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/devotionals/rosaries/how-to-pray-the-rosary.cfm

Please consider attending our PTO Meeting on Wednesday at 7:00 PM as we will be finalizing WALK-A-THON needs and Halloween Carnival and we need everyone’s assistance in order for success!

Please continue to pray for the Santos Family (Pauline-4 and John Paul TK), and also Msgr. McSorley who became ill during Mass yesterday.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your cooperation with carline last Friday. We were unaware that there was a wedding at 3:00 PM and had to make a quick adjustment for the safety of all.  We appreciate your flexibility!  For the next few weeks, there will be construction on Avenue 33.  I have been assured that it will not effect our morning drop-off or carline, but please be aware of the extra traffic in the area.  I also want to thank Mr. Camarena who was able to paint over the graffiti on the school wall before the children returned from church on Friday

Student Leadership will be holding their first School Family Lunch on Thursday, October 3. School Families consist of students from each grade that are placed together to form a "family unit". Each month Student Leadership members organize a Family Lunch, so all the families have an opportunity to get to know one another and socialize. The goal for October’s first Family Lunch is for new students to meet their "family members".  On Friday, the School Families will sit together at First Friday Mass.

On Friday, October 4, we will be honoring our student athletes. If your child is a student athlete, they will be able to wear their uniform jersey with uniform pants to school on Friday. We will be having a small pep rally to celebrate our teams, their accomplishments, and wish them luck for the rest of the season! This is also a great time to thank our volunteer coaches: Mr. de la Cruz (Varsity FB), Mr. Ponce and Mr. Galaz (JV Football), Mrs. Castaneda, Mr. Bonilla and Mrs. Munguia (Varsity and JV Volleyball), Mrs. Galaz (Track) and Ms. Casanova, our volunteer A.D.

We will have also have our JAMBA JUICE FIRST FRIDAY this Friday.  Students may bring $4 on Friday to purchase a Jamba Juice at recess.

Our first Madrinas/Padrinos Meeting is Monday, September 30 at 6:00 PM.  All parents who would like to be a part of this grassroots marketing for our school should attend this meeting.  This is another way to get your service hours!

On Sunday, October 6, we have a School Mass at 9:30 AM.  The 8th Grade is assisting with the Liturgy and selling Krsipy Kreme Donuts before and after the Masses.  The Choir will be singing at the Mass and all students attending should be in Dress Uniform. We will meet in front of the church at 9:15 AM. Please plan on attending with your children!

Please continue to pray for the Santos Family (Pauline-4 and John Paul-TK).  Mr. Santos remains very ill and the family needs our continued prayers during this difficult time.

Blessings,

Mrs. Samaniego
